Summary:
Ch. 8: Pittsfield, Illinois, in a small town where the total population equals 4,000. A country girl named, ███████ is an average girl who hates celery and green peppers. She comes along with his father; his task to buy seeds. The store's radio announces that the area in which the mimics conquered is growing.

She's cute... |
The same night, a snow storm appeared; almost as if to muffle the noise of something big happening. ███████ wakes up to the sound of something hitting something hard. She sees a body impaled by a number of sharp projectiles. Another thud, ███████'s father comes busting through her room's door. They run to hide when she sees a fire swallowing the town. Her father locked her inside the basement along with her mother who has been hit, presumably by debris.
|
Mom's been hit! |
Mimics appear, but just when they were nearing the basement entrance, ███████'s father runs one over with his truck. Mimic withstood a head-on collision with the truck. Another mimic attacks the truck, the man manages to escape.
Now, he is faced with two mimics, he makes them aim for him. Both mimics shoot at the same time and he dodges, the mimics' hitting each other. He is grazed with no way to fight another mimic, he stands still. Heroically dying to save his daughter and his wife.

NAISU TAIMINGU! |
Daylight, the UDF comes too late. ███████'s mother, dead. The aftermath counts ~1,500 fatalities and a town in ruins. Everything happened in just 3 hours, with only 3 mimics. Left with only vengeance against the mimics, she steals someone else's passport to join the UDF. She is now on her last personal mission, to exterminate mimics.

Ch. 9: We are presented with the information that every area that mimics have conquered, turn into wastelands and toxic. The narrator compares this to human evolution. As we have been destroying nature to create a place we can call home.
|
Toxic Farts |
Half a year after ███████ (Rita Vritaski) signed up for the UDF, she is deployed in the battlefield. Wielding only an assault rifle, Rita can kill mimics with a few hits. Just when Rita was about to explode with anger, her commanding officer speaks about the origin of vampires. It calmed Rita by distraction.
|
D-bag: Arthur Hendrix |
Her commanding officer leaves when suddenly an unusual looking mimic descends from the sky. Rita shoots it and next thing that happens is that she's back in the shower room. She realizes that she went back 30 hours before deployment.
|
Fan-service triggered! |
Rita collects her thoughts and hypothesizes that the odd mimic was the cause of her loop. She shoots it again in her 2nd respawn and finds out that she is right. After multiple respawns, she notices that the number of mimics, the placement of mimics and their armor are all changing. People who she fought with back in earlier respawns are getting killed early.
|
Fan-service Triggered 2! |
She researches data about mimics and comes to the conclusion that her rifle is useless now. She needs a weapon that doesn't consume ammo. She visits Shasta Raylle and asks her for weapon however, they are still in the development of a "pile driver" (the one that Keiji uses before changing into a battleaxe). Rita gains her signature, giant battleaxe. She swears that she will succeed and break out of the loop and will never die until she fulfills it.
|
To much self-esteem? |
So, we learn more of Rita and her drive. She's molded into this cold person because of the respawn she has gone through just like Keiji. She's smarter and more agile. We also learn that the mimics only became that invincible because of Rita's looping. If it was some other soldier, perhaps the mimics wouldn't have progressed much with their data collecting and would still be vulnerable to guns.
|
When your town is burning, run. |
*The chapter title for chapter 8 is "███████." Yes! It is intentionally blocked out because she doesn't want to share her whole past with us readers. Since Rita used another person's identity, she became the identity. Confused? I can't explain it better. But yeah, it is blocked out. Let's pretend that her real name is "Moe" okay?
