Spoiler Alert! If you are gonna read this post, please read the actual manga first!

Summary: Hinako, a full time worker at an ice cream parlor has a date for tonight. Spacing out at work, her co-worker Kai reveals that she had a boyfriend a month ago but she was dumped. Why was she dumped? She's a clean-freak who is so deep into her problem that she could never make a relationship last long. Holding hands is a stretch for her condition, let alone hugging and kissing. The bottomline is: she's a 30 year old virgin. Today, she decides to leave it all behind, locked up and come to the date with no fear.
That night, Hinako's date was going smooth until, they guy presses himself against her. She gets ready for a kiss but her fist clench up and her reflex kick in. A hit right in the kisser and the guy falls down! Misunderstanding happens as passersby look at the scene, Hinako's date is ruined. Another one bites the dust.
As if, a wrecked date wouldn't kill her day, her friend calls her to announce her engagement with his boyfriend. A broken-hearted Hinako staggers on her way home, crying when she runs across her co-worker Kai. She tells him about her date and how she's a grenade, ready to explode as soon as the key is removed. Kai denies what Hinako is saying and presses on her. He clutches her hand and kisses her, up to the point where she couldn't take it anymore and screamed "no!" Kai gets ahold of himself, apologizes and makes up for it by setting up a date for her.
Her date; Machida is about the same age as Kai, good-looking, polite and quirky. Based on Hinako's good mood during work, we can say that her date went good and she's going for their third one after her shift's done. Hinako's talked to Kai but he's response was odd and seems that a wall between them has been constructed. She thinks of the kiss they shared to be the reason but for Kai, it's completely different.
Third date, they come to Machida's place and as Hinako passes the door, he grabs her body. Kissing her, touching her, feeling her; Hinako's mind goes into defense mode and reflexes activate. Machida catches her hand before she could land a hit. He now believes Kai's warning but knowing Hinako, she invites him but this time, with her hands tied down so she could not struggle. In her mind, she apologizes and bids farewell to Kai.
Hinako, laying in the wooden floor, tied up with her top flipped exposing her breasts and her skirt up showing her underwear. Even though she's with Machida, she couldn't stop thinking about Kai. When Hinako was about to tell her feelings, the doorbell rings excessively as if someone was in a hurry. Kai comes in, slamming the door open and sees a barely clothed Hinako. He grabs Hinako, gets her outside and talks to her; leaving a confused Machida.
A distance from their origin, Kai apologizes for trying to help the wrong way. He confesses his feelings to her and reveals that he couldn't take it if she was swept away by Machida when he's so into her. He closes the gap between her and gives Hinako a deep kiss (sloppy seconds). After their first kiss of the night, she warns Kai of her reflexes but he replies, saying that he likes that part of her too. She reciprocates Kai feelings with hers and they live happily ever after. Or so, I wanted to say but this wouldn't be a Josei without some mature content, would it?
Yell, rape. It's much more effective.

Stop reading from this point on if you don't want to get dirty. Dirty on a fap level and dirty in a psychological level |
This is not about moe. |
Art: Modern with a shoujo feel. It looks like a hentai manga I've read but it really is more "girly" in a way. It is a josei written and drawn last year so it really looks "mainstream." The screentone use is over the top and is typical of a shoujo title. It's not as flowery as shoujo but it's definitely sparkling just a bit (No, not the Edward type of sparkling, that's shoujo). The male characters are softened to appeal to women but are distinguishable enough to look like men.
That escalated quickly. |
The audience for this title would be women in their late teens or early twenties. Males reading this would be in their middle to late teens because this kind of manga would definitely be a must-read because of the smut within it. Even though I like my dirty jokes and sex related talk, I didn't read this because of the smut. I read this because I was looking for something different from my usual shonen and seinen reads.
He's not the Pizza delivery guy you expect. |
Panels: Let's keep it short here. Since it's a really short one-shot, everything happens very fast. Skipping 1-3 seconds at each panel to portray movement. Each panel is filled with screen tone which doesn't really bother me but maybe showing just a bit of white space can make a bigger difference than using every kind of screen tone ever created. You get your money's worth with the print so rejoice (if you have one)!
Story: The story isn't the first one I've read. I've read Butterflies; Flowers before and it has the similar feel. A manga with an aging shojo (virgin) protagonist, having her first time with someone they love. The only unique thing I know is that it's about a nearly 30 year old woman working at an ice cream parlor. Is the pay that huge that she doesn't need to look for another job? Aren't you supposed to be looking for the career one has always dreamed to have?
The story was told in a straight to the point where almost everything meant something. There are some "filler" parts too but they weren't in the way as much as other fillers out there (*cough*Naruto*cough*). I would love more stories like this but I bet they could've written at least a volume's worth of content.
Characters: Hinako's situation isn't unheard of but it is rare. Her desperate need for a boyfriend is just a bit pathetic. I can understand why she wants to have a boyfriend so much and some part of me just wants her to be in a lasting relationship, and a part me also wants to say "there are much older women who still can't find their partner so don't get worried about it, it will come in due time. Also, your virginity is not a negative trait of a woman, it's how it should be." I like her even if though she was with two guys in one night. I like her honesty, because if a person doesn't want to be "touched" or "felt" then that person has the right to struggle. She's also a neat-freak which is another show of honesty. The only thing I didn't like about her is her uhhh... "I don't want to ruin this experience so please tie me up so you can continue" attitude. *Sigh*
Kai, he's normal. I'm haven't experienced this kind of thing so this is just what I think; him "helping" Hinako find a date, and this date is my very horny friend, I would not do that. If I were to help a friend find a decent date, I would select a person who is kind and gentle. If I can't find a person like that, I would just say to them that they need to take their time with this girl I'm helping because she has a condition. He gives Machida, a horny guy just trying to pop Hinako's cherry as soon as possible. Really? How many friends does he have? Couldn't he come up with a better date for the woman she works with?
One more thing about Kai, I get that guys are not so sure about their feelings and once the girl gets away, they start to feel the pain, I've experienced that. I was too slow but then I went up and got that girl (we broke up anyway, but still). Bottomline; he's a good guy but he wasn't that good of a guy.
Hinako, I feel, grew enough for this story. She started out as a shy, always-on-guard, desperate woman to a "I will accept myself as my partner accepted me for who I am" type of woman. She still has her monster reflex BTW. As for Kai, he gained some balls to confess.
Bottomline: Read it. If you're looking for something a bit different (just a really tiny bit), read it. If you want something serious and not just all romance but some "REAL" life action, try this. Since it's a short read, I would suggest this to anyone who's looking for a romance short story. It's mature than your shoujo and it's uhhh... sensual...? I'm just glad I read this because I enjoyed it and it was funny and serious at the same time. I can't really end this properly can I?

Priorities are definitely screwed. |

Knocked out with one punch, from a woman. |

If I ever meet a person like Hinako, I'll definitely do this just to get that same reaction. XD |

Wish there was a full page after this hit showing Machida knocked out. |
Rating: 7.5/10 Good-Very Good
Still here? Okay! Let's talk about the title! It's kanji! Yay! Nope. So 30-sai means 30 year old. If you really want to be correct, it should be 29 year old turning 30; because Hinako is just turning 30 the year the story happens. The next part is Shojo meaning virgin. You would think "Shoujo" is the same as "Shojo" right? WRONG! Shō means small, then jo means female; put them together and you get "girl." As for the title, it means virgin and nothing else. I won't hide the fact that I read this from a manga hosting website (I still won't say anything specific because people don't pay me to do this, but if you ever want to make me advertise your website; you are most certainly welcome to give me some volumes of manga! XD) and the translator has something to say about the "OL" part of the title. The translator wrote that OL means "Office Lady" which is like a slang for "porn for older women?" Then the other meaning (the real one in this title) is "O Eru no Lady" which means "Erotic Lady." It's also a pun kind of thing because the first part "O Eru" is how they pronounce "OL," see? Okay! Kaisan! 解散!
