Monthly! Clockwork Planet 1: RyuZu Yourslave

This series began serializing way back in September 2013 and they only decided to translate it recently so I'll just put this on my list of series to review every month. As the title says, humans are living in a Clockwork Planet because Earth is finished and can no longer be habitable. Earth looks like Saturn now because it has a Gear-Ring around it and it has floating cities that are made from gears. It's like a clock. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that we have automatas in this story. Steampunk innards with human skin, these automatas would turn you into a Hideki loving her Persocom named Chi (reference: Chobits by Clamp).

The art is totally modern and shounen in a lot of ways. If you watched last year's anime titled "Unbreakable Machine-Doll" and liked it, this might appeal to you. If you like robot looking like humans that are totally loyal and will do anything for their master, then go ahead and read this. No, perv, not those kinds of orders.

Spoiler Alert! If you are gonna read this post, please read the actual manga first!

Summary: A thousand years ago, the Earth has become dead and a genius clockmaker brought life to Earth with gears. "Y" called this plan "Clockwork Planet."

Don't tell me this doesn't interest you?

Naoto Miura, a high school student who loves to work with machines, is disrupting class by working on a clock rather than listen. He also sports headphones that are apparently not banned during class. He gets bullied at school because of his strange hobby and also because of his height. He's the kind of guy who just screams "bully me" to the eyes of tough guys.

Don't eat that...

School ends, he walks through the streets and sees a trash pile filled with metallic parts. He comes home to see his incomplete automata. Naoto goes through his life and takes a bath when an airplane dropped a container on top of his apartment. His roof now gone, he investigates the metallic crate and sees a coffin filled with cogs and gears, containing an automata. Naoto draws his ear closer to the automata's body and hears that it's working but something isn't quite right. Instead of leaving the building that is about to collapse, he repairs the automata.

Iyaaa! Sukebe!

With his unique sense of hearing, he spotted the broken part which looks like a ring laced with scriptures. After hours of repair, the automata comes to life! It announces it's length of slumber to be about 200 years and continues on to criticizing the growing idiocy of humans. But before they could further converse, the danger of a collapsing building came and with some the automata's abilities, they jumped out of the ruins. Tired and maybe the lack of oxygen made Naoto sleepy.

He pushed the right buttons...

Naoto wakes up in the automata's lap. She reveals her name to Naoto, RyuZu and offers her full loyalty to him. He agrees to become her master, and to make it official, RyuZu requires certification. She tells Naoto to stick out his index finger and she begins to suck on it in an erotic way. This certification earned Ryuzu her last name, "Yourslave."

Aaahhnnn!

An error within the planet rises up, abruptly ending the special moment shared between RyuZu and Naoto. This led to Naoto realizing that he does not have a home anymore. He worries about his valuables but luckily, RyuZu has retrieve the essentials; including Naoto's noise-cancelling headphones. His headphones serve as kind of like an anti-stimulant so his ears don't get overwhelmed with noise. His super-hearing ability is to blame for him needing noise-cancelling headphones.

That escalated quickly.

Dawn, RyuZu gets Naoto dressed for school. They gather a crowd because of RyuZu's beauty and he explains that they make an odd couple. RyuZu wonders about society's standards, tries to understand it but she could not take it at face value.

Beginning of class, a transfer student comes to introduce herself. Her name, RyuZu Yourslave. She then waves at Naoto and all of the boys looked at him with deadly glares.

HAIII!

Fast forward to the next month, he became labeled as a terrorist in Akiba. We get to see more characters that might have important roles in the coming chapters, namely; Halter and Marie.

Rewind to the present, Naoto explains that it all started with today's encounter.

Y series machine number 1

Likes: The setting. It's unique in a grand scale but it's the same setting as a futuristic Japan. I mean, where would you see a planet with it's own man-made ring like Saturn's? Also, how did this master clock maker; "Y" transform our rocky Earth and turn it into a gear/cogs world? This is not Cybertron! I still like the idea though but it's just too sci-fi to be believable. It's a setting out of a game.

Huge A$$ Gears.

Automata, I love Sci-Fi stories about Robots or Androids that want to be in the same level as humans. I mean, it just piques my interest because of how complicated things will be. These things wouldn't just accept that they were made by humans and soon refuse working for us. Ah, the complications of artificial intelligence. I suggest you read the short story by Isaac Asimov titled "Reason" so you would get what I mean and what I like about A.I.'s.

Don't...

RyuZu Yourslave; the cute automata. I would love to have a cute android serve me. I might fall in love with a machine and be criticized heavily but who doesn't want a companion who you can just trust wholly. Humans are full of mistakes and are usually selfish so wouldn't you want something/someone to converse with and not get into any sort of argument? I would also like to have someone to talk to who is not human. A new perspective in life would surely open my eyes.

A coffin... full of gears... really?

Dislikes: The art is modern but it doesn't have a signature style to it. I feel like this kind of art style is everywhere and thus making it unappealing to other people.

Quirks: One page can turn this shounen manga into a 16+ older teen rating. Take a look.

Oh my...

Predictions: Chapter 2 will be out soon so don't you worry your little head about predictions!

I decided to pick this up since it's looks promising and I'm kind of interested in how this "Clockwork Planet" works. I more interested in how geology works in this planet than anything else. The curious side of me is really excited. Tell me what you thought about this new series! Is it good? Bad? I would love some honesty! Mata ashita!
