Now-Reading 9: Minamoto's Story (源君物語 [Minamoto-kun Monogatari])

Have you heard off "Hikari Genji" or "Genji monogatari?" If you've watched a lot of anime, you probably have heard of it. It's the story of a man searching some sort of attachment from females because he doesn't have that maternal attachment. He goes through 14 women to help him achieve that attachment. That's the extent of what I got from this series. Why am I telling you this? This series is basically the modern take on that story.

Every girl encountered by the main character.

If you felt like Seishun Pop! has a ton of sex scenes, this has chapters of it! Considering it's a weekly published series, 8 pages of sex scenes isn't enough! The scenes are showed in a way that leaves the reader to use his/her imagination to create the scene. It's not a hentai manga but it is smut.

The mangaka for this series is Inaba Minori. Believe it or not, like Seishun Pop's mangaka, she's a woman. I'm not discriminating for what they draw but I applaud them for being brave enough to show their work. The good thing about her is that this is her first work ever. She might have drawn doujinshi that no one on the Internet knows but it's good to know that she has room to grow. On to the story shall we?!

Summary: The story starts with the Minamoto Terumi, boy who has feminine features and often is mistaken for a girl. Due to puberty, many boys have a non-homosexual liking to Minamoto's face. Girls of his age group tend to bully someone who gets is prettier and cuter. Unfortunately, even being a guy, he is not safe from bullying. This started his fear and hate of women. Graduating out of middle school, Minamoto entered an all boys high school to avoid women. The sad part is that he still lives out every morning. commuting with a train packed full with girls studying at schools close to his.

Finally graduating out of high school, Minamoto was forced to live somewhere else due to his father having an accidental child (here, we assume that the condom broke). His father begged and kneeled over in front of his younger sister to take his son to lessen the living cost. This is where Minamoto's struggle and journey to manhood, begins.

Fujikawa Kaoruko, a single woman who will do anything to study Genji's story. To describe her, she's a hot babe that is just ripe for the taking. The sad part is that this "hot babe" is Minamoto's aunt. Minamoto has his manhood tested when Kaoruko shows her chest to him. She tells him about the love that she wants to have, "Raising a child into a mate one would like." Kaoruko asks him to be part of her experiment in studying the various methods and ways that Genji used to capture women's hearts. Why is he the perfect candidate for Kaoruko's Genji experiment? First of all, Minamoto did not grow up with a mother and second, his fear of women needs to be cured.

Minamoto's objective in Kaoruko's research is to love and sleep with 14 girls just like Genji did. His goal does not need to be exactly in Genji's encounter order but choosing the exact type of girls is necessary.

His long journey to becoming a man who can make every woman who can only fall for him is going to be a tough one. With Kaoruko's help--by help, I meant exploring her body (for research of course)--things might get easier or worse, depending on a person's stance on incest.

It's a Western greeting.

Art: The art is good. It's shounen in most aspects but I feel a woman's touch with some features of the manga. Sometimes it's too busy on the eyes as there are a lot of details going on. It's a bit on the darker side because of the abundance of screentones. There's nothing wrong with it, its just that it isn't going along with my tastes.

I'm glad you are pumped up but...

Story: The story is not unique as it is a virgin's story of struggle to become a ladies' man. I've read more manga where the protagonist is a virgin that experiences love for the first time, and those manga are similar to this one. The good thing about it is that it is that he's following Genji's footsteps. Genji, throughout his love life, had one woman that he courted for 14 years and I'm interested in how Minamoto will trying and break Genji's record with a similar woman.

Characters: Minamoto is the average virgin male who wants to have "some." He is relate-able enough that people who might have experience in intercourse will laugh and say, "I was like that too!" His situation might not be realistic but most guys would fantasize about such an ideal world. Kaoruko is the hot, mature professor that everyone is lusting over and she's the stereotypical Kuudere, where she does not bear emotions except for the major ones, happy and disappointed. She is willing to give her body if the experiment needs to and this is not at all normal. I can see scientists and other specialists that experiment on things to be their own guinea pig to study on but those are just handfuls, therefore she is not relate-able.

Girls don't actually have breasts, they only have white light emanating from their chest.

The other characters that Minamoto encounters are mostly girls and to be honest, they are stereotypical. Yandere, tsundere, kuudere and a dandere. Even though they are given enough backstory, they still feel like paper cut-outs of the stereotype they represent.

You can't have a sex scene without that embarrassed look.

As for char. development, Minamoto doesn't grow much as a person. With a 120 chapters out as of typing this, Minamoto is still the wuss he is except that he's not a virgin anymore. Grow a pair of balls and have confidence in yourself.

Bottomline: Read it. If you are looking for something that has a lot of sex scenes and women who have issues with themselves, I suggest reading it. If you don't want to see women seen as sexual objects and less like human beings, do not read this. This is one of those manga where a woman might read this and say that it's selfish, like masturbation--just your right hand (or the left if you're a lefty, or if you're like me; a thrill seeker) and your dirty thoughts which are usually selfish.
