Review: Alive: The Final Evolution Volume 2

Spoilers ahoy! You need to read the first volume to get ready for this because I'm going all out on the story here. You have been warned!

Warning! This title contains graphic violence, gore and blood.

This volume continues the story where volume 1 left off: A few chosen people who survived the strange virus have gained unique powers. Most of these chosen ones call themselves "comrades" as they possess the power to lead people to "death," because life means suffering. Taisuke Kano now knows about these unique powers and has discovered that Hirose was the one who killed his bullies at the rooftop. Hirose comes for their friend; Megumi Ochiai, to save her. Accidentally, Hirose pushes Megumi off the rooftop but Taisuke comes to the rescue. Taisuke grabs a hold of her and falls with her. Landing on his feet, Taisuke and Hirose are both surprised to know that he has powers of his own but Hirose does not welcome Taisuke as a comrade. It ends with Taisuke fainting.

Alive: The Final Evolution Volume 2: (story by Tadashi Kawashima, art by Adachitoka)The story starts when Taisuke wakes up. A lot of question comes up to him that need to be answered. The majority of the volume is about finding answers and going North. He meets a new comrade; Yuta Takizawa, a young boy who was orphaned since his mother committed suicide during the "Nightmare week" incident. Trapped, Taisuke now decides on whether or not to kill Yuta. To die is to be free. (Not my opinion, just making sense of the story.)

It just keeps getting better! I need more from this title! It's not about the suicide virus anymore, it's about the journey North. (Not sure if that's the case with the other volumes.)

Art: As I said in the first volume review of this title, simplistic but the blood is still there. It kinda went Gantz on one point. (I guess I should just link you to a page where you can see for yourself.) Click here.

The panel pacing is focused more on action and that's good because it is a story about people with powers. They are just small tricks so a little detail to that will make it seem more like a "super-power."

Oooh! Criss Angel couldn't do this, can he? Right?

Story: The background is finished, now this is the main part of the story. Back in the first volume, you were introduced to this world and now the adventure is starting.

I like how they changed the scenery away from school. A stationary setting for this kind of story is not going to work. They've introduced a virus global, so you might as well let the characters travel. They've also introduced new characters to thicken up the plot.

Characters: Taisuke was built up good from the first volume. He develops even more as a character in this volume. Yuta has a mature mind but he still plays kiddy tricks. Yuta manages to change once his "mini-arc" is done. It might look slow but it's just starting to pick up speed at this point.

Bottomline: Give it a read. It's not as surprising as the first one (Of course you dumdum!) but it still holds it's own as a part of the story. It's interesting enough to make you keep reading and want to know more about it. Just read a happy-feeling book like Pastel afterwards.
