Review: Dogs: Prelude

I thought about reviewing more of Dogs: Bullets & Carnage but I think I'm gonna pass that up and review the prelude first. Since I have read only the prelude and the first four, my information regarding the whole story might be incomplete .

Warning! This volume contains graphic violence, gore, blood and mild nudity.

This is a prologue to the series Dogs: Bullets & Carnage. The Dogs series wasn't planned to be 10 volumes long and it was only meant to have this oneshot of a title. Because of the demand for a continuation, Shirow Miwa created the main story Dogs: Bullets & Carnage which has the meat of it all. This volume acts like a compilation of different characters, each story has highlights each of the four characters.

Dogs: Prelude (Dogs 0): (by Shirow Miwa) The story is about the 4 main characters of the series; Heine, Badou, Naoto and Mihai (Mihai is not a main character).

Naoto has a really nasty scar so don't google "Dogs manga."

(I was about to tell you all more but this is for people who see this as TL;DR.)

The first story is about Mihai Mihaeroff; an ex-mob hit-man, and his mission to visit both his lovers grave and reunite with his "adopted" son.

The second story is about Badou Nails, an information broker that happens to see an unsightly view; the boss of a mob doing... naughty stuff. He now finds himself trapped and out of cigarettes.

Third story is about Naoto Fuyumine; a victim of an assassination. Her mentor raised her to be a deadly weapon to avenge her parents' death.

The final story is about Heine Rammsteiner, a product of experimentation left to waste until a priest rescued him. He lives to go back down "below" and get rid of the past that has haunted him.

Art: Compared to the main series, this prequel is unrefined and needs more work but it still feels the same. It is still good even though it was an experimental thing. If you want the better work in the art department, then go ahead and skip this.

The panel pacing is not so very good at showing the action. It's true that the major actions are shown but I wish that the fast parts weren't compressed in one frame (that might have been the fault of editing and compressing all the necessary action into specified number of pages).

Story: The volume really only tells Mihai and Naoto's past. Heine and Badou's stories don't give anything but a current job description. Nill (the cute little girl with angel wings) has a part in Heine's story but other than that it's "a day in the life of" kind of story.

Take a break! Have a Nill!

The story merges everyone except for Naoto who is out of the picture, for now. I like how each character is connected to each other even though it's the underground world.

Characters: Like the story, Mihai and Naoto are pretty much the only development shown in this volume. Badou and Heine (because their stories are pretty much their day-to-day life) show only a little change due to mistakes made and people they meet.

Bottomline: Read it. You might not like it because it's not as good as the main series but it still has the same feel when it comes to action. This is pretty much a compilation of badasses that come out and exact revenge or fulfill a duty.

If you are reading Dogs: Bullets & Carnage, do not forget to read this so you'll have a more stable background for these characters. To know them more, basically. I'm gonna review the second volume of Dogs next week so watch out!

BTW; there's an OVA (Original Video Animation) of this volume so after you read this, you can watch it moving and in color! Yay! Some minor differences but it's about the same as the manga.
